Butterfly Summers A Memoir of Gloria Stuart’s Apprentice is a vivid glimpse inside the art studio of Titanic actress Gloria Stuart as seen through the eyes of her great granddaughter Deborah. “Great Gloria,” also an accomplished painter, bonsai master, and fine printer, transforms Deborah’s life when she hires her as an artistic apprentice one summer to work on a set of hand-made artist’s books in the shape of giant, flying butterflies. Over the course of several summers, as Great Gloria nears her hundredth birthday, Deborah finds herself in a race against time to discover her own courage and help her great grandmother realize her dream of completing the books before it is too late.

This memoir celebrates life and our ability to overcome doubt. It reveals Gloria’s likeness to Old Rose, the character she played in Titanic, in her passion, strength, humor, and deep love of the arts. Butterfly Summers will appeal to artists young and old, to book lovers, and to all others who long to know more about this spirited actress through her young protégée’s tale of their inspirational relationship.

Butterfly Summers A Memoir of Gloria Stuart Apprentice eBook Deborah B Thompson

I did not know very much about Great Gloria's life and career until I picked up this delightful, little memoir. Thompson has done her research well, the pacing of Great Gloria's story alongside Thompson's own journey into young adulthood is charming, detailed and smile-worthy. I learned so much about the various art methods and disciplines Great Gloria's life. The procedural paragraphs about print-making, book-binding, tracing, cutting, calligraphy (to name a few) were clear, concise and placed me right in the moment with the author and her mentor. What I appreciated most is the great amount of gentleness with which Thompson treats both her own story and the story of her dear GG: just as gently and carefully as the book they work on. The vulnerability and grace with which each precious detail and moment are told attests to the deep bond shared by mentor and mentee. If you were a fan of Old Gloria from her films or are searching for a unique personal memoir encompassing local SoCal History (or you just love butterflies) check out 'Butterfly Summers' -- you won't be sorry!

Butterfly Summers A Memoir of Gloria Stuart Apprentice eBook Deborah B Thompson Reviews

The author really knows how to paint a picture with words. Far from simply reading a book, the imagery makes you feel like you are in the room as story unfolds! The story is extremely moving, heart warming, and filled with insights into the early years of Gloria Stuart and her great grand-daughter.

A must read for budding artists and anyone who has ever dreamed the impossible!
The fact that we can still have such remarkable books being made by hand and that the story of it can be shared by ebook is by itself so uplifting. When you add to that the beauty of a great grandmother transferring her verve for art and life to her great grand daughter - this is inspiring. When, on top of this, we learn about the life of one of the great women of cinema, Gloria Stuart who played Old Rose in Titanic - why this is something to treasure and share!
Loved this lyrical memoir. A gentle Hero's Journey.where a mismeasured page can be a tragedy of mythic proportion. Do not be deceived by the poetic style of the writing or the charming art studio setting of the drama. This is a story of life and death, success and failure and the sorting of those priorities that affect us all into a pattern that makes life meaningful and ultimately exaultant.
Come, test your talent for Haiku. Delight in the intentional mistake. Curl up with a sweet tea and allow this book to wash over your heart.
It was a pleasure to read this emotionally poignant and beautifully written behind-the-scenes look at Gloria Stuart through the eyes of her great granddaughter. The contrast in character between the author and the actress provides a unique dual biography of a portion of two different lives. As the book progresses with its fantastic descriptions and dialogue, the reader is pulled into the world of Gloria's workshop and the last projects of her long, accomplished life. It becomes clear how much Gloria shaped her great granddaughter's development into a young woman who is increasingly confident in sharing her own gifts. It also becomes clear how much Deborah shaped and prolonged fulfillment in Gloria's life, filling the role of Great Gloria's apprentice as she worked on her butterfly books, and giving Gloria a reason and purpose to stay around a little longer and touch the world a bit more with her energy and talent.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about Gloria Stuart as a real person, anyone interested in delving into the arts and the lives of artistically sensitive souls, as well as anyone interested simply in a good, compelling, uplifting, narrative read. If this were fiction, I would have thoroughly enjoyed it, but knowing that the people and experiences were real--and that this is a unique inside-look into the famous actress from Titanic through the eyes of someone who had the opportunity to spend so much time so close to her in the last years of her life--makes it that much more enticing.
This should not be required. So I don't feel like it is necessary. Makes me not want to do anymore.
Couldn't get into this book.
I enjoyed reading this book from beginning to end. It's a delightful story about the relationship between a great grandmother and great granddaughter, while working on a beloved project. Pure beauty. A pleasure to read. Looking forward to reading more from the young and talented Deborah B. Thompson. Upward and onward!
